iPhone 3.0 Software Adds Languages

In today's presention regarding the next version of iPhone software, which is supposed to be released sometime this summer, Apple indicated that it will include new languages and keyboards.

Unfortunately I have not found any info yet about which ones (though I would expect at least Arabic/Hebrew, Greek, and Thai might be among them). If anyone has details, let me know.

PS As of 3/25 I have seen online photos or other reports indicating new keyboards are available for Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Indonesian, Malay, and Thai.

PSS Apple issued the tech specs for the iPhone with 3.0 software on 6/8/2009. It confirms UI, keyboard, and predictive dictionaries for Arabic, Thai, Greek, and Hebrew.

PSSS When made available 6/18/09, 3.0 has off/on switches for two keyboards not mentioned in the tech specs, Bulgarian and Macedonian. But these keyboards do not work.

They also said that the iPhone OS 3.0 will include updated keyboards of languages that are already supported.

Yes, I double checked with a developer friend, Arabic is indeed supported in 3.0 :D

No reason to jailbreak for me ;)

According to http://macworld.idg.se/2.1038/1.218639/svenskt-tangentbord-i-nya-iphone-os-30 they improve the Swedish keyboard to give direct access to å, ä and ö, just like a normal computer keyboard. I would assume the same applies for other languages, but I have not been able to confirm it.

Does anyone know if this Arabic keyboard includes Persian and/or Urdu letters? Have you seen any screen shots of the full character set?

I think Apple would have added Persian and Urdu to the list of languages in the tech specs if it were possible. You will probably need to find a display model to test to be sure what is covered -- holding down a key will sometimes show additional character choices in some keyboards.

Eric -- Read the tech specs. If it's not there, it doesn't have it.
